About

Thomas Lumsden, CFA

I invest my own capital in private companies and support the founders building them. I’ve been investing for over 30 years, across three very different asset classes and through multiple market cycles.

I began my institutional investing career by helping launch Promethean Asset Management, a hedge fund, where I was a partner from 1996 to 2007. There I led direct lending, structured investments, and opened the firm’s London office. Before joining, I had built my own relationships with two alternative asset managers, each now managing more than $70 billion. I brought both to the firm as advisory relationships, and they invested more than $700 million alongside us in deals we originated and led.

I then spent about six years originating, advising on, and acquiring utility-scale solar projects in Europe and the US, including as a partner at Origis Energy, a private equity-backed solar developer and owner.

Since 2020, I’ve focused on venture, with investments split between early-stage and growth rounds. I’m most involved at the early stage, where I help founders shape the story they tell investors and bring in the right investors, particularly strategic ones. I also invest selectively in emerging managers.

All told, I’ve been involved in more than 95 equity and equity-linked financings representing over $2 billion of completed investments. I’ve helped build a hedge fund, financed energy infrastructure, and now invest in venture. Each has shaped how I look at the companies I back.

Outside the Office

I was born in London but grew up in Los Angeles and spent most of my career between New York and London before making Miami Beach home. I graduated from Boston College’s Carroll School of Management with a B.S. in Finance, was a varsity letterman on the Division I tennis team and earned my CFA charter in 2000.

I love surfing and stand-up paddleboarding, practice tai chi several times a week and yoga most days and read widely. I’ve taken up padel, where my Division I tennis instincts keep telling me the point is over. The walls disagree. I’ve also recently picked golf back up. So far, the course is winning.
